The School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies (ISAT) hosted more than 100 attendees at SIU Cyber Security Day 2016 on Saturday. The event was a fun and informative day filled with industry experts speaking about information security, interactive discussions, and a mock cyber defense competition. ISAT and CASA supported this event: IST Faculty (Tom Imboden, Associate Professor, and Belle Woodward, Associate Professor), ISAT Director (Dr. Sam Chung) & Staff (Ms. Shannon Gwaltney), and CASA Dean (Dr. Andy Wang), and CASA Chief Academic Advisor (Ms. Elaine Atwood)
ISAT hosted two invited speakers: Tom Harness, a local business owner, discussed social media security, and Curt Wilson, a security researcher who discussed the cyber threat landscape. Students and faculty from SIU and Kaskaskia College also presented technical demonstrations and tips to help participants during the mock competition.
The highlight of the event was a three hour mock cyber defense competition in the afternoon. Student volunteers helped attendees during the mock competition as they worked on different challenges and tasks for high school and college participants. Our student volunteers have been working hard to prepare our Cyber Stadium environment and create a fun and exciting mock competition modeled after the official Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition events.
