Areas of Study

Students must complete all the requirements for one program option to be eligible for graduation. Requirements include courses focusing on their area of study, EST program general degree requirements and university core requirements.

Automation & Control Technology

This program option focuses on preparing students to work with automation control equipment such as Programmable Logic Controllers, motors and drive controls, sensors, pneumatics, actuators and other specialized hardware and software used in industry. Graduates are commonly placed as control engineers and planners.

Biomedical Equipment Technology

This program option provides the student with knowledge and skills to work as biomedical technicians and field engineers on medical equipment. Students gain an in-depth understanding of human anatomy, sensing and monitoring principles and biomedical equipment operation. A high level networking course is included in this track because of the growing importance of telemedicine in the field.

This program option prepares students for careers in network installation, administration and security. Combined with a background in digital principles, data communications and hardware principles, EST graduates have a superb knowledge from the physical layer and up of data communications and the networking model.

Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation (IACE) Review Committee has certified that Southern Illinois University Carbondale courseware maps 100% to the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) National Training Standards 4011 (for Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professionals, NSTISSI-4011) and 4013 (for System Administrators SA). The IACE Program provides consistency in training and education for the information assurance skills that are critical to our nation.
