The Emerging World of Information Technology
Southern Illinois University is in good company as our accomplishments earned recognition on the FORBES 2014 most entrepreneurial universities list. This news comes as no surprise to the alumni of the School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies.
In 2009, three former SIU students co-founded RoverTown, a mobile marketing firm focused on the college market. Mike Philip, Brad Miller, and Joshua Freeman are all SIU alumni. Philip, from Wheaton, was at the time an Information Systems and Applied Technologies major. Freeman earned his Finance degree in December 2009, while Miller completed his Management degree in May 2010. Freeman and Miller are both from Rantoul. Joining Philip as principals in the company are Michael Rzeznik, a 2012 SIU Carbondale graduate in Information Systems and Applied Technologies from Lake Zurich who serves as Chief Technology Officer, and Jeffry Harrison, a 2012 SIU Edwardsville Business Administration Finance and Entrepreneurship graduate from Red Bud and former student trustee on the SIU Board of Trustees, who serves as Chief Operating Officer. RoverTown officers say SIU Carbondale and the Office of Economic and Regional Development have been instrumental in their success.
President and CEO of Teaming Solution for Education Camelle Logan graduated from SIU in 1989 and has been a member of the IST Advisory Board providing scholarships to students of ISAT as well as hiring our students for both internships and full-time jobs. Teaming Solution for Education offers management consulting for school districts and charter school organizations.
Information Systems Technologies has long prided itself as offering interdisciplinary courses and offering concentrations in fields such as Web Development. Grant Brown, Chief Revenue Officer at Rant Media Network and alumni from Business Administration, graduated with a focus in Web Development courtesy of ISAT.
And the next generation of ambitious entrepreneurs are on the rise. Alex Glasnovich received Honorable Mentions at the 2012 Saluki Idea Competition. Alex presented his Data Stopper app that will stop data on a phone of a driver when they drive in a school-zone based on GPS location and sensors. In 2013 Glasnovich, along with teammate Alex Hutchison, tied for first place in the 2014 Saluki App Competition with their App The Gluten Free Converter. Glasnovich and Hutchison won the Blue category, focused on productivity and enhancement while first place for the People’s Choice Award went to ISAT student Justin Dial for his carnival style shooting reaction/memory game BangBang! Glasnovich and Hutchison each won a $300 prize and Dial won a $150 prize.
At ISAT, each of our programs begins with a strong technical foundation that lay the groundwork for your success in industry. And our faculty does more than just teach the correct circuitry application or best use of building materials, we emphasize the importance of hands-on learning opportunities. We believe that initiative should always be rewarded and there is no such thing as too ambitious.
Take Tommy Richardson for example. A 2005 graduate of Information Systems Technologies, Richardson worked his way through college in retail at businesses such as Lowes, Dillards, and Best Buy. Today Richardson is Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of Social Media Gateways, a company that specializes in cloud-based social commerce solutions for enterprise and SMBs in the hospitality, retail, sports and entertainment sectors. Richardson's company is based in Palo Alto with additional offices in Las Vegas and New York. SMG is backed by angel investments and has partnered with major Silicon Valley technology leaders, including Hewlett Packard (HP). Richardson is a successful entrepreneur in the information technology industry and has a proven track record of successful execution of multi-million dollar development projects and corporate initiatives!
Alumni and Students like Glasnovich, Rzeznik, Philip, and Richardson are already acting on what Forbes and US News & World Report have been reporting:
“Technology is one of the most pervasive forces in our society today… so we're especially dependent on those who make their living by creating, powering and supporting our electronics and information systems. Employment numbers are already high within the tech industry, but this is expected to be one of the fastest-growing fields between 2012 and 2022. When you consider this industry's high job prospects and well-paying occupations, it's easy to see why our No. 1 job overall hails from this part of the workforce.”
The US News & World Report article draws upon data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and then calculates an overall score from several additional measures including job growth, salary, and work-life balance. What this means for graduates of Information Systems and Applied Technologies is a job market waiting for you and the skills you provide. For the faculty at ISAT, it comes as no surprise that 8 out of the top 10 technology jobs are offered through our program!
When you join the School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies you get the hands-on training to chart a successful path in the Information Technology job market. Just this Summer, NPR Fresh Air aired the story of Journalist Brian Krebs, who broke the story about the Target data security breach in 2013.
“There was an identity theft service operating underground that sold access to people's most personal information ... their Social Security numbers, dates of birth, mother's maiden names, anything you'd need to assume somebody's identity.”
With increasing attention on the need for cyber security, the School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies offers an elite Information Assurance program recognized by National Security Agency and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In addition to learning about ever-expanding careers in Information Security and Information Assurance, you can be part of the action as the Security Dawgs student cyber defense team with multiple state championship titles in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. With programs like Cyber Security Days and the Build Your Own Android App Summer Camp, ISAT offers opportunities for everyone.
Our graduates are in high demand which gives you the opportunity to step directly from the classroom into your future!
